Music unites communities and a Drum Circle can bring my students together, beyond our classroom and concert band setting.
My students are amazing.
They come from very diverse backgrounds and financial needs. We are proud of the differences and the students enjoy learning from each other. For programs, we like to perform music from a variety of musical styles and cultures and learn what we can, beyond the music.
My Project
We have multiple ideas and uses for these drums! Last year, we co-sponsored, along with the dance classes, a presentation on African Drumming and Dance. Some members of my percussion class, and the dance team, were able to actively participate and had the time of their lives! We learned so much and would like to be able to collaborate with the dance classes more often... but the drums we used belonged to the company that did the presentation. Second, I have had several students ask about starting a Drum Circle. What better way to bring my students, and others who are not in the Band program, together to create music.
Music brings people together.
A Drum Circle will allow my students to explore a completely different style than what they're used to. A style that is many of their cultures, but have not experienced. The African Drumming and Dance presentation left a lasting impression and I would love to share that experience with future students.
