Our drum line classes have become one of the many groups on campus of which our community is very proud. We regularly involve 35-40 students each school year. With this level of interest, the need for drums and other miscellaneous percussion equipment has exceeded the available funds through the school budget. We endeavor to raise money each year to insure all students have well maintained instruments on which to play.
The drum lines participates in over 35 performances each school year, including multiple presentations of a 2 hour original production integrating percussion with drama, graphic arts, history, and other Humanities.
Here's a list of a few performances in which they participate... The students march in the Veterans Day and Memorial Day parades in service to our veterans. They welcome incoming freshmen and their families on transition night and all of our families and students during Open House. They support their peers at multiple sporting events throughout the year and work hard to raise money to supplement the school budget.
My Project
The drum line has a reputation for working hard and presenting powerful performances. Some of our rehearsals last as long as 5 hours. Additionally, many of our performances require down-time between the playing of songs.
In these situations, placing the snare drums on a stand rather than holding them with harnesses or playing them while they sit on the ground would be better in terms of technique, sound, occupational health, and timing.
All students learn to play all the percussion instruments by rotating throughout the year. And, the drum line as a unit will be able to play more readily after the pauses described above. So, everyone in the drum line will benefit from having the 8 snare stands.
