My students are amazing! They live in a low economic rural area but don't let that stop their opportunity to dream and succeed. They amaze me every day by learning both online and in-person during these challenging times. They are becoming life long learners and constantly ask questions to make their learning more meaningful. They show up every day ready to catch their dreams. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, many classrooms are in a remote learning environment. This will be a new approach to teaching that will surely present many challenges as well as opportunities to innovate. Having choices in the setting, safety, and content will be beneficial to all the needs of our students. Students will be able to bloom socially, emotionally, and academically with this new platform.
Students and families (K-12) and teachers will be working together to do whatever it takes to learn this year!
My Project
Mindfulness is the process of paying attention to what is happening right now in our own experience in a curious and open way. All 5 senses are used during mindfulness. Sonic drums and tuning forks are great relaxation tools for listening in the moment. Students learn mindful listening with sounds and silence.
Adding music to mindfulness practice reduces student stress.
School is extremely stressful for all students. Add on living in poverty, uncertainty and trauma, a recipe for anxiety, stress, and escalation is created. Students cannot learn while they are stressed or suffering from debilitating anxiety.
With mindfulness, we can start to overcome these stresses together. At home, in school and through online learning, students will be motivated to practice mindfulness by the tones and vibrations the drums and forks create. Instruments will be available for individual check out and used during instructional time.
Please help me share mindfulness listening tools, rhythm and breathing exercises, and tones. With mindfulness practice and these instruments to help, my students will begin to learn how to focus, de-stress and regulate their minds and bodies so that they can overcome their many challenges. My dream is to have my students start these practices in middle school and use them for the rest of their lives.
