Drumming: Better Living Through Percussion

My Students

Do you remember what it was like to be the odd one out? The one whose equipment didn't work so well? The one who had to work extra hard to be able to do the same activity as everyone else? This is the reality for many of my students when we play drums.

I teach at a K-8 charter school in Minnesota.

85% of my students are children of color who speak a language other than English at home. However, when we play music, especially percussion music, there is no language barrier, and every child has the chance to be successful. The looks on their faces when they "get" a part they are playing is a wonderful reward for me and for their classmates. They enjoy playing instruments, and look forward to the days we play.

My Project

We have been playing West African, Caribbean and Japanese style drumming since I started at the school six years ago. We drum on water bottles and old tires taped with packing tape. We would like to add a real drum to the water bottles and tires so we can advance our drumming technique. Drumming on water bottles does not give the subtlety of tone that playing on a real drum does. It also starts to hurt our hands after a while. The addition of a real drum will enable a student to focus on the music, not on whether the drum will be in the same place from phrase to phrase. Many of my students are from southeast Asia. As such, they are smaller than Caucasian American or African-American children. The water bottles we use are difficult for some of them to hold between their knees for the duration of a song, since their legs are so short. Many students with special needs also find it difficult to keep the drum in place for playing properly.

Drumming is changing the lives of my students in many positive ways.

All of my students focus better when we are drumming, and this focus carries over into the next class in their day. Studies show that music also helps children with reading and math understanding. Adding a drum to our music room will mean that one more student will be able to fully participate in making music without worrying that the drum will slip and fall, or that their hands will hurt at the end of class.
