This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My fifth grade students have been working on a rhythm unit. All of these kids come from many different backgrounds both culturally and economically. They all come to our school in order to learn, grow, and succeed not only in school, but in life. I think that it is time to introduce a more culture rich curriculum to my students. Because our student population is so diverse, it's crucial that our curriculum reflects that, and being a low income school there is only so much we can get from year to year. I want to provide them with the most that I can!

My Project

In my classroom, we use music to explore the world! Technology is a great tool to virtually explore different styles of music from around the world, but there is nothing like being able to perform on these instruments and learn the different styles of drumming patterns and melodies through a hands on experience.

This project will help my students explore these instruments in the classroom with their own hands!

We are looking to build a collection of percussion instruments from around the globe. This project will allows us to enhance our World Music Drumming curriculum with shekeres (gourd rattles), a bendir, a riq, and more tubano drums.
