This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Last year, I began teaching in an inner city public school in Massachusetts serving 501 students in grades PK-4. The Department of Education statistics show that 78% of our students have high needs and that 65% of our families are economically disadvantaged. Additionally, for 32% of the students, English is not the first language, and of those, 17% have little or no English language skills.
In 2016-17, our school was among the lowest performing schools in the state.
During a state inspection, the staff got high marks for positive interaction with the students and was awarded a Level 3 Turnaround Grant.
As a veteran music teacher, I knew that the power of music education could help with the turnaround efforts. During music class, I engaged the students in creating, performing, and responding to music. Activities included singing, playing instruments, listening and moving to music. Students have opportunities on a regular basis to improvise and compose both vocal and instrumental music. My students love coming to music class!
My Project
Since 1996, World Music Drumming has transformed lives and built community through ensemble drumming, singing, moving, playing xylophones and recorders. Students and participants in school and community settings develop a range of character-building strengths such as focus, listening, teamwork, and respect while strengthening musical skills built through aural tradition. The World Music Drumming Curriculum is now taught in over 20,000 schools worldwide as well as in community outreach programs and venues.
By helping to fund "Drum Up the Fun with Rhythm Lids," you can give my students the opportunity to experience the many benefits of World Music Drumming at a small fraction of the cost of conventional drums.
Remo’s Rhythm Lid Drumheads are designed to fit most 5-, 6-, and 7-gallon pails and buckets. Most hardware stores or big box stores carry pails or buckets that are compatible with the Rhythm Lid™ Drumhead. Applying the drumhead to the pail with a slight downward pressure creates a “Press Fit” seal that produces a quality sound that is affordable.
