This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember your favorite extracurricular activity in school? We are trying to make playing percussion in the school band a memorable experience for our students. <br> We would like to bring our band out to basketball games starting at the end of November and perform at Homecoming in December!

My students face significant financial struggles.

As such, private music instruction has not been an option. Many of my students have never even attended a band or orchestra performance, let alone held an instrument or been given the option to play. We are a Public Charter School that services inner city youth. These kids are no stranger to hardship and struggle. School is often the safest place they are all day. For many, it is also where they receive their square meals. Participating in a school band will be a positive opportunity for these students. It will also open many doors for them as they apply for colleges as this helps to present the "well rounded student." It will be a place where they can express themselves and create something amazing as part of a supportive group. We will also be providing an after school Pep Band that will play for our home basketball games. This will offer an additional safe environment for students after school hours end.

My Project

We need quality percussion instruments to fill our percussion section of the band! We lack a pair of crash cymbals, which are needed for many pieces of concert band music, as well as pep band music. We also need the handle straps and pads necessary to hold and crash the cymbals. Since we are purchasing a high quality set of cymbals, we, naturally, need a stand to place the cymbals in when not being used. This will not only give us a safe place to store the cymbals, but also a means of holding them during a concert as percussionists switch between instruments. Lastly, we are requesting a mallet holder and set of bass drum mallets for our bass drum. We had a concert bass drum donated to us at the end of last year, but we do not currently own any mallets to play the drum with. Many pieces of music (both concert and pep band) require the use of a bass drum. This will allow us to use our instrument and "Drum Up the Band!"

Our students deserve a safe and supportive environment to express themselves in.

Playing music teaches students a number of valuable skills. They learn to listen to and communicate with each other. They learn to express ideas or themes while others express alternate themes. These are necessary musical and life skills. Many students acknowledge that participating in music changed their life. We would like to provide another life changing opportunity to our students.
