This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember your favorite extracurricular activity in school? I am trying to make playing percussion in the school band a memorable experience for my students.

My students face significant financial struggles.

As such, private music instruction has not been an option. Many of my students have never even attended a band or orchestra performance, let alone held an instrument or been given the option to play. We are a Public School that services inner city youth. These kids are no stranger to hardship and struggle. School is often the safest place they are all day. For many, it is also where they receive their square meals. Participating in a school band will be a positive opportunity for these students. It will also open many doors for them as they apply for colleges as this helps to present the "well rounded student." It will be a place where they can express themselves and create something amazing as part of a supportive group. I also hope to offer an after school Pep Band that will play for our home basketball games. This will give students an additional safe environment after school hours end.

My Project

We need quality percussion instruments to fill our percussion section of the band! We do not currently own ANY percussion equipment, and the school year is about to begin. The requested instruments are the bare bones of a percussion section, but we need to start somewhere! Students in the percussion section will learn to play each of the instruments requested, and rotate through playing them daily.

My students deserve a safe and supportive environment to express themselves in.

Playing music teaches students a number of valuable skills. They learn to listen to and communicate with each other. They learn to express ideas or themes while others express alternate themes. These are necessary musical and life skills. Many students acknowledge that participating in music changed their life. I would like to provide another life changing opportunity to my students.
