Our first two projects were major successes.

We steadily acquired percussion instruments and play with them on a daily basis. My students are an incredibly energetic and passionate lot. I teach music to all students k-5, and bring innovative ideas to the table. The students want to try new things, and many have never even seen a concert band on a stage. I was blown away by their curiosity when I showed them a snare drum for the first. They had never seen anything like that up close! They are hungry to learn and have an enormous appetite. I am extremely happy to say a few of my students have begun private lessons on their own!

My Project

A generous parent of a graduated student came to me and asked, "Hey, would you like a drum set?" I was quick to take it into my room, tune it up and try it out. The students love playing on it, however to teachers in the nearby rooms politely request to keep the rocking out to a minimum... So, we need some muffles. The drum set will play a crucial role in my future plans for the school. Eventually, I envision a 4th and 5th grade steel pans band. We have half of the instruments, so we need to learn how to use them. The frame drum is more of a teacher aid. It provides a mobile instrument which I can walk around with, give to students who answer questions correctly, and is easy to maintain. It will be very handy during our drum circles.

The drum set will serve as a fantastic reward system for a focused class.

Many students are unable to have a drum set, so I provide the opportunity to use one at school. The few times we have used it, they can't look away. They soak up the information like a sponge and squeeze it out at home. It starts conversations in the house, sparks ingenuity and creativity, and brings happiness to downtrodden home lives. And some just want to hit something with a stick and make some noise.
