Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work as the music and choir teacher at a Title I school where most students are low income. It has been open almost three years, and I have been there since the beginning. The program focuses on DLI; students learn Spanish half of their school day and English the other half.

I added a Modern Band program this year, which teaches students guitar, bass guitar, ukulele, piano, and drum set using popular songs and my students love this addition to music class and the opportunity to learn songs they listen to on instruments.

I am always trying to find new branches of music to expose them to and I am a firm believer in hands-on learning and believe this is the best way for information to stick. When every student has an instrument, this helps the information to stick.

My Project

We have a modern band program at our school. I teach students guitar, ukulele, bass, piano, and drum set using popular music the students are familiar with. This had been a great addition to my program. The most coveted instruments to play is the drums. I rotate the drums out each quarter between four students in my middle school band. At the beginning of each quarter, students are given time to work in groups in their new instruments and get their music ready to play with the group. This is a hectic time in my classroom because the drums also must practice. They cannot use headphones like the electrical instruments or turn down their instrument to help with the sound. Part of playing drums is also the feel and how hard or soft you hit, so practicing by playing softer isn’t the best option.

By having drum set mutes my drum set students could practice whenever needed during class without disrupting other groups from being able to practice.
