My students need a set of ollas - unglazed irrigation pots that allow us to create a drought-resistant garden.
FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Parodi's classroom raised $389

My Students
I teach a 6th grade Language Arts/History core class on the west end of Alameda, California. Of all of the schools in which I have worked over the past 20 years, this is truly the most diverse. We are a Title I qualifying school, with students from all walks of life. About half of our students are considered socio-economically disadvantaged, and we serve one of the Bay Area's largest communities of homeless/transitional families; these kids sit side by side with the children of tech industry professionals with million-dollar Alameda homes. There is no ethnic or racial majority at our school - every classroom is a reflection of our close-knit, multi-cultural community.
My Project
Last year my students and I cleared and repaired garden beds at Encinal that haven't been used in years, but we were unable to move forward with our plans to start a garden as there was no nearby water source. On a walking field trip to a nearby nursery some of my students discovered a solution: ollas.
Ollas have been used in the Americas for hundreds of years to irrigate crops in dry areas.
They are unglazed pots that are filled with water and buried under the surface of a garden. They allow water to slowly seep into the surrounding soil, directly to the roots of the plants. Every week or so the ollas are refilled.
Funding this project will allow us to complete our goal of restarting the Encinal gardens, and in a way that also ties in with our study in 6th grade of ancient history.
Half of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
