Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, they are here, and they are ready to learn and succeed. Many of my students have not seen success in the large comprehensive high school in our district and have turned to us for that success. With smaller class sizes, a focus on individual instruction, and a goal of improving literacy skills, students have every opportunity to meet their full potentials.

My Project

Students school-wide spend 10 minutes a day engaged in silent reading. They are allowed to read any title that they choose. It's important for students to have access to high-interest titles to help them stay engaged and motivated.

Our students often struggle with reading, and we believe giving students time to read will help improve not only their attitudes toward reading but also their skills.

We also have a high population of long-term English learners. We are hoping to engage students in reading and, hopefully, get these students reclassified before they graduate.

Students are always asking for specific titles, and, with budgets tight, I'm hoping this project for books will get funded so students can read the books that they have asked for.
