My students need a drone with a camera. Drone usage is new technology in Agriculture. Obtaining a drone will introduce my students to a new and exciting field in Ag.
Agriculture Education is "Learning by Doing". We can talk about the use of drones in class. However, if the students actually had one to set up, fly, maintain and use videos/pictures from that would be ideal. Learning by a hands on approach & being able to buy a state of the art drone would help.
Our school is a county wide school.
My students come for a variety of backgrounds mostly in a rural setting. I do have Special Education students as well as those that are considered high functioning. However, they all share one thing, they like to learn by doing. Being able to use a shop, greenhouse or new technology like a drone would allow them to experience real world situations. Learning from a textbook does not do justice to some topics. My students enjoy getting dirty and working with their hands. Unfortunately, this style of learning is expensive.
My Project
We plan to use the drone to explore its uses in commercial Agriculture. The use of drones on the farm can be use for crop scouting for such things as weed pressure, insect types and damage, weather related items (hail, wind, drought or too much moisture), disease, as well as checking for nutrient usage. We also can envision using the drone for checking cattle on the range to pigs in a feedlot. The use of drones in Agriculture is limited by federal regulations that are antiquated. Once many of these rules are lifted the use of drones in Agriculture will skyrocket. I want my students to be on the cutting edge of knowing what a drone is, how to operate them, and to develop possible uses and products that can incorporate their use into a farmer's everyday life.
A donation would make it possible to obtain a drone that otherwise my budget could not afford.
It would change the students lives by allowing them to have a hands on approach in drone technology. It may allow them to think outside the box and come up with new ideas that could be marketed to Agriculture companies. My students could go on to careers that are directly related to drone technology or they may find an interest in part of the technology. Either way it will expand their horizons.
