This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
Our scholars here at school come with very interesting life stories! Many scholars want to be successful; however, they are unable to provide themselves with the daily necessities they need in order to accomplish that! We are a Title One school and one hundred percent of our scholars receive some type of food or clothing assistance.
We aim to be the safe place that provides for students: mentally, emotionally, and physically.
Many of our scholars come to school with emotional and mental baggage. They come to their safe place often in dirty clothes, hungry, and sleepy. We strive to provide them with a safe place that can help meet as many of those needs as possible. It is not of any fault of their own that they are put in these positions.
Although my scholars typically do not come from places of "readiness," they enable the qualities that can help them find success in life, inside of themselves.
Although this list was difficult to compile, each item is a necessity that these children do not have on a daily basis. We provide students a place to wash dirty clothes when they don't have one, a place where they know they cannot be ashamed of asking for an additional school shirt, a pair of pants when their clothes don't get washed at home. They need a safe place and an army of people to trust and help them. We are those people!
Together, we can help make a difference in the lives of every single scholar at school!
