My Students
I work at a wonderful school in Seattle. We are nestled between the Central District and the Lake Washington neighborhoods. We offer Montessori Math instruction as well as rigorous ELA classes. Our students include families that have lived in the neighborhood for generations as well as families that are new to our country. We bring together a variety of cultures and backgrounds through hard work and love.
I have the privilege of working with every student in the school and I don't want to waste a minute of teaching time!
I am the school librarian and the technology teacher. It is the best of all worlds. Books and bots all day long. I need to make the most of this time.
I want to keep things fresh and the interest high so I am constantly striving to present the students with new experiences that will foster their love of technology, literature, and learning. All of this is also done with equity and social justice in mind. Sometimes I need help with resources and that is where you come in.
My Project
We love learning at LES. We read, do math, research projects, and community work with gusto. We also love robots as we are a strong STEM school. We have been working for the last two years to build up our legions of robot teaching tools and to develop thoughtful lessons. We have now reached the point where we are refining our teaching and taking it to the next level. We are moving beyond simple block coding to the point where are students are designing their own projects and testing their own limitations. We need to keep up with them!
To be empowered in this day and age you need to understand technology.
It is not only a key to success but a key to self advocacy. It can also be ENGAGING and FUN! We are hoping to purchase six of the Wonder Workshop Dash and Dot accessory kits. These match up with robots we already have but will add new possibilities as far as functions go. Included in the kit is a bulldozer and a tow bar attachment. Doesn't that sound fun? There are also bunny ears (those are 100% fun).
Having technology accessible to all of our students is a tenant of our school community. Equity means that if you don't have access at home you have it at school. None of our students should be denied access to technology or to finding their own potential future career in technology. This project will support all of the students in our school and thereby a growing generation of youth that will learn technology through a lens of equity and teamwork.
