My students need a career costume set so that they can explore various helpers within the community through dramatic play and facilitate opportunities for practicing oral language as well as social and self help skills.

My Students

This is a Kindergarten through Second Grade Autistic Support classroom in Philadelphia. As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of our classroom. These students are all diagnosed with Autism and have a wide range of needs and abilities. Some of my students are non-verbal and many are functioning under age and grade level. They also have a wide range of sensory and behavioral needs which require varied supports in order to help meet their individualized needs.

I am greeted every morning by these wonderful kids, all of them with a thirst for knowledge that inspires me to do everything I can to help them be their best.

Each day I take care of the needs of each student as they arise and this sometimes means I can't give my full attention to my entire class. They require substantial support in order to gain independence in developing their communication, social and emotional awareness, and academic skills. I have high expectations for my students that I know they will be able to meet if they are given the appropriate materials, instruction, and support.

My Project

This school year I am focusing on facilitating dramatic playtime for my students. Dramatic play is a time when students can break through the walls of reality and pretend to be someone or something different from themselves. My students struggle with play skills such as playing appropriately with their peers and the abstract nature that comes with dramatic play. The career dress up costume sets will provide an opportunity for all of the children to use their imagination, explore different career roles, mirror real life, and learn how to interact and relate to peers in a fun, creative way.

When children play dress up, the are sent the message that they can be anything they want to be.

They are transformed into doctors, firefighters, zookeepers, construction workers, astronauts, and so much more. Dramatic play is crucial to a child's development and these costumes will help enrich the environment in which they will play in daily. Engaging in this type of play helps support early literacy, improves vocabulary, encourages creativity and teaches conflict resolution, problem solving, and critical thinking skills. With these materials, my students will be able to develop language and communication skills, in addition to social, emotional, and self help skills when playing with their peers. Donations for this project will allow my students to develop skills that they will not only use in the few years they are in my classroom, but skills that they can use throughout their entire lives.
