What do you want to be when you grow up? Many children can answer that question, but often without knowing how the people who work in their community help others every day.
I teach a class of nineteen curious five and six year old kindergarten students in a school-wide Title I elementary school.
Although we are a very large elementary school, we are a close community of learners and strive to make the most of every day.
My Project
I want my students to learn more about the community they live in. After being read the books about various careers and exploring and organizing the vocabulary that explains the many different people that help a community thrive, my students will use the Community Helpers puppets and dress-up materials in centers to explore on their own the ways that people work together every day to help others. This gives them a chance to try out different jobs that they may one day choose. They will have the opportunity to re-read the books about different careers, act out interactions between community helpers in the puppet center and even dress up as a community helper and act out their job.
One of the many roles we have as teachers is to introduce our students to the world they will grow up to live in.
We have a responsibility to guide our students into becoming productive members of their community, and these materials will provide a fantastic introduction to the many helpers they may one day become.
