Dress For Success In Pre-K

My students need two dress-up trunks, one for the girls and one for the boys.

I teach in a large, urban predominantly working class area of New York City. Our school is located in an economically disadvantaged neighborhood and many of our families are struggling to make ends meet. I am responsible for educating 18 children who are curious and eager to learn. The life of a young child tends to be overly structured. Children need to be given the opportunity to grow, learn and express themselves. We need more spontaneous play and that is why I would like to add a dress-up center to my pre-k classroom. I would like my classroom to be an interactive place for children where they learn through play experiences. Children need the opportunity to dress-up as others, pretend and re-create real life situations that they have observed. The children's language acquisition can be greatly impacted by this since they will be engaging in situations they normally would not. Children need to create their own scenarios and make up their own games based on stories that the children come up with in this particular center. I promise you that their imagination and creativity will not be silenced or interrupted in any way. Children will jump on the chance to go to a center where they can dress-up and play pretend. Children use dramatic play to imitate adults. Whatever they see, they mimic through play. Imagination is a vital thing, not something to be stifled. I am requesting two dress-up trunks, one for the girls and one for the boys. With your donation, we can help bring drama, fantasy play and language for many years to come.
