" Children should be seen, but not heard." These words should have never been spoken. Rather, the saying should have always been, "Children should be seen AND HEARD." Through music and movement in the classroom, my students will learn to know themselves.
I teach in one of the most diverse schools in the world.
My students are from America, Korea, Russia, Mexico, Mongolia, India, .... My students are both low income and middle class. The range of experiences, language, and knowledge is so vast. How do we both inspire the students to be visible and to create their voice? Giving them the tools and the opportunities for creative artistic expression is our common denominator.
My Project
My students need materials for music and movement. We need 25 hand drums, 28 mallets, several world music CDs, 10 jump ropes, and various balls. My students will have numerous opportunities to express their creativity through the universal languages of music, movement, and dance. Music and movement have both been proven to positively affect mood, memory, and health. Students will be able to understand the instruments that make up an orchestra, the stories that are being told through music, the rhythms that can come from a drum, and the confidence to perform their own music in front of our school community.
There are numerous studies that show that the IQ of students will actually increase from having exposure to music education.
The students will become even more connected to history and the cultural diversity of music and movement. My students will be challenged to grow socially as they create a safe space for their peers to express themselves musically and physically.
