Dreamers of the Golden Dream: An Exploration of California

Help me give my students an exploration of the California Dream through reading literature from the Golden State.

My Project

To be from California is to not just be part of the American Dream, but the California Dream; California has been perceived as a place of new beginnings, where great wealth could reward hard work and good luck. California was seen as a lucky place, a land of opportunity and good fortune. It was a powerful belief, underlying many of the accomplishments of the state, and equally potent when threatened. The question that begs to be answered is "Does the California Dream inspire or destroy?"

The goal of this project is for students to explore literature from and about California where they will gain a greater understanding of the place in which they reside and the power, both positive and negative, of the California Dream.

The texts from this project by John Steinbeck will be used alongside poetry and non fiction texts to help students explore the subtleties and nuances within the California Dream.
