My 6th, 7th and 8th grade students have varied abilities and backgrounds. Ours is an International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme school which draws from 21 different communities.
My students can't wait to come to class and hate to leave, especially if they appear close to success.
"Can't we just try one more time?" is what I am asked most days when it is time to pack up. When an engineering project doesn't work they dive back in to figure it out and make changes. When things do work there is always squealing and sometimes dancing. This abundance of determination and enthusiasm always makes me smile.
My Project
In class I suggested we get a second 3D printer and my students immediately gave me their ideas for why they need it.
"A second printer will inspire us to improve our technical innovation skills and creativity." "We can: practice more 3D modeling skills; print replacement parts for the robots; use our skills to pass the Inventor certification test; make more objects (there is always a backlog)."
Students will keep objects they create to inspire them to create more complex models. Ultimately we want to make our 3D printing sustainable selling items to pay for supplies and teach business concepts.
