Dream Big with Performing Arts Biographies

Help me give my students the biographies of past and present entertainers to broaden their appreciation of music, theater, film, and television.

My Project

My classroom is a PreK-6 music/ performing arts classroom where we explore everything from music instruments to improv to film making.

I would love to broaden my curriculum by adding biographies using the Who Is/ Was books and the Little Golden books.

These books not only look at contemporary artists (Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift) in the fields of music, theater, film, and television, but also those of the recent past (Bob Dylan, Aretha Franklin) and those of long ago (Mozart, Shakespeare).

The biographies will allow me to introduce their contribution to the performing arts. My goal is to focus on an artist a week and give an example of their work by playing a piece of their music, live performance, or a clip from their movie or tv show.

One of the most interesting things I have found about these books is that they are aimed at my level of students. They have many facts about where the person comes from, obstacles in their lives, how they got to their level, and their contributions to the world.

I have shared a couple that I have bought with students. They absolutely love hearing about Charlie Chaplin's contributions to comedy and movie making and how Elvis grew up in Tennessee. They want more, and I want to give that to them.

I have always told my students to dream big. What better way than to introduce to them people they may never have heard of to inspire them or take a look at someone they admire now and learn life lessons about hard work and perseverance.

My students are small town rural who often times can't see what's out there in the world. I would like to showcase what is out there and broaden their horizons.
