Drawn to the Colors of Science

Help me give my students the tools to demonstrate the sense they are making of new science concepts and how "color has meaning" in our world.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

"Color has meaning". There are a few phrases I use over and over when teaching my Anatomy, Zoology, and Health classes and this is definitely one of them. Whether discussing why human blood is red or why some male animals are brightly colored and the females are usually not or why the lungs of smokers are studded with black material, it is clear that things on our planet have evolved to have certain color patterns.

Rather than rote memorization, my science students chase the "why" and "how" of science.

There is no better strategy in this teacher's toolbox to assess the depth of understanding than a simple drawing. Instead of asking them if a concept makes sense, students are expected to show me the sense they have made using the simplest of tools: dry erase boards and markers. When given an open-ended prompt, students show me what they know with a visual representation. There is incredible choice and diversity available for all with this strategy such as the size of board (lap, desk size, or class), size of student group, time, depth of prompt/connections, etc.

As they draw, students are expected to use accurate color representation whenever possible as this demonstrates a deeper level of connection and understanding. This grant will fund a volume of dry erase markers in various colors and sizes to enable students to best show what they have learned and lead to fruitful...and colorful... class discussion.
