My Project

I want to create a Nature Journal experience for my middle school students. I re-discovered the childhood magic of connecting with nature when I started gardening with California native plants. Naturally, the wildlife came- the birds, butterflies, bees and hummingbirds. Then, it was a serene and green grasshopper nymph looking at me; later, a family of mushrooms under an Oak unlike any I'd seen in a grocery store. When I discovered a Naturalist app to help identify them all, I recognized science and art were converging in my garden, and inside me! The wonder of what I might see and feel each day in my garden was life changing.

Albert Einstein said, “Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better.” Back at school, as I shared my nature discoveries with my students, I noticed their eagerness to discuss flowers they'd observed and creatures they knew, big and small.

It made me reflect....so many students with an interest in the natural world, but without backyards to explore, only balconies. But what if students had opportunities to connect with nature at school?

Nature Journaling is a powerful practice that will teach my students to slow down, be still, and "look deep" in nature for the wisdom it provides. As they observe their school greenspace, documenting in words, pictures and numbers the flora and fauna encountered, they do as artists and scientists do. Activities include using the "I Notice, I Wonder, It Reminds Me Of" method, experimenting with different art media, comparing data collected over time, and describing their experiences and feelings through sketching, creative writing prompts and poetry. Outings with their Nature Journal will create lasting memories carried throughout their lives, helping them become adults who care deeply about the world, and future environmental stewards of the land.
