My video production students are enthusiastic and eager, and thrive on hands on learning. They're the kind of kids who might not sit still very well, and many of them are students who have struggled to find success in more traditional classes. However, I get to see a different side of them, because in my class they're able to exercise their creativity and learn through experience. Surprisingly, when entrusted with expensive video production equipment (after careful instruction on how to use it), they become calm, careful, and serious about the work they're doing.
They all have significant potential, they just need the chance to learn in an environment they will thrive in.
Video Production classes provide them with that environment. Many see the potential for future careers related to Video Production. I have students who aspire to be screenwriters, cinematographers, and even professional YouTubers!
My Project
My advanced video production students love to push themselves to explore all areas and aspects of film-making, and I love allowing them to do this. Often, however, we don't have the tools and equipment necessary to really allow this exploration to happen.
I have motivated students who would love to learn to create animated films, but this requires drawing tablets that we don't have.
We've tried doing animation just using the computer mouse, and this was an experiment with frustration. Adding these three drawing tablets to our available technology will allow my students to explore this exciting aspect of film-making that has so far been inaccessible to them.
