Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The Covid years developed strong sketching ability in many of my 3-5th grade students. Living in lower income homes, my students’ access to art supplies is very limited. This group is creative. They used any pencil and papers around them to practice.
Given the right supplies, these artists will thrive.
I want to see them use real charcoal pencils, explore with various densities of graphite, and develop more control. This project will create a Drawing Studio. K-2 will benefit with stencils and beginner supplies. My older students 3-5 will benefit with more variety of supplies to explore the art of drawing.
The studio time in my classroom is choice-based explorations. My students will have a choice of fine ink pens, soft-hard density graphite pencils, charcoal, and stencils. Students explore value and texture using these media. Drawing is a base skill for most artists. Value and texture are part of the visual art standards. These tools will help my students produce the work they describe to me as the evaluate their #2 pencil drawings.
