My Project
I teach in a school where the student population is linguistically and culturally diverse, and which serves a community with families from all over the world. I am always looking for highly engaging, creative ways to tap into my students' hunger for knowledge and their curiosity about the world, whether it is through art, music, dance, or literature. I see the exciting possibilities that I can make available to my students who need opportunities to explore creative and critical thinking through different learning modalities.
Sketching has been scientifically proven to improve memory, increase creativity, improve fine motor skills, and strengthen brain functions--all good things to have for our students.
It is also a wonderful way to promote social-emotional learning in the classroom.
Last year we used sketchbooks on a regular basis, and it became an inspiring way for students to show their creativity and learning. It was such a success that I want to do it again with my new class! These mixed media sketchbooks will give my students valuable opportunities to observe the world around them, as well as use their imagination to express their thoughts and feelings. Because sketchbooks are such a versatile learning tool, I will be able to plan a variety of art lessons that can be integrated with all content areas: nature sketching with science, exploring geometry with sketching two- and three-dimensional shapes, musically-inspired free-drawing and cartooning that tie in with social-emotional learning, to name a few. Sketchbooks will also be an informative assessment tool for me as the teacher, since I'll be able to view and trace progress as students draw and paint from page to page, over time.
