This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students who will be participating in our Artist Colony, an After School Club, will be in the 3rd to 6th grade. These students have either self identified and/or have been identified by their classroom teachers as having an intense interest or talent in the visual arts, specifically drawing. Growing up in South Central Los Angeles, in a primarily working class, inner-city neighborhood, these students do not have easy access to art materials and supportive programs. Also, coming from families where parents may be working multiple jobs and struggling to meet everyday needs, these students may find that tools to develop their artistic talents are luxuries that their family cannot afford.

My Project

My school is trying to encourage students who exhibit an intense interest/talent in the visual arts by starting an "The Artist Colony."

Many students have latent artistic talents.

However, it is difficult to develop these talents because they do not have the appropriate tools and materials.

By providing the drawing pencils, charcoal sticks, and oil pastels for our Artist Colony (After School Club), we will be helping students develop an appreciation for and skills to use different tools to create drawing pieces that reflect a deeper understanding of color, value, texture, and space!

By supporting these students' passion for art, we will also be supporting their capacity and motivation to become lifelong learners!
