This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
A typical day in my room is a room filled with adolescent energy working on their current project. Students are engaged, talking, moving, asking questions and listening to instructions from me. I want to use that energy and curiosity to open their minds to using technology creatively with tablets.
My students, about 150 6th, 7th, 8th graders, walk through the classroom door each day.
They have this room for them to create, be creative, imaginative with technology for 50 minutes a day and my goal is to increase their use of technology and art by introducing them to drawing on drawing tablets.
The students that are in the class can be short sixth graders that are barely out of elementary school and unsure of themselves with the tall 7th and 8th graders. This class is the first time they have access to computers for projects. Having a class with drawing tablets at each computer will be an experience unique to the art room and increase their ease and confidence with using technology.
These are 8th graders that have elected to be in art for 3 years in a row because they like a class that is primarily about being creative with technology. Then there are the 7th graders trying to catch up with the 8th graders. 90% of the student population is eligible for free and reduced lunch.
My Project
I am requesting 4 drawing tablets. We currently have 6 drawing tablets for 10 computers. I am hoping to bring technology into the art room in as many ways as possible.
Students ask to use the computers with drawing tablets and most students don't get a chance each day to use it since 6 for 30 students is not enough. I hope to get four more so each computer will have a drawing tablet and each student using the computer will be able to draw right on the screen with the tablets.
Students have to scan their drawings now mostly and indirectly have access to their drawings on each computer but they can't change the drawing. Students will be able to draw on the tablets and it shows up on the screen. Students will see the possibilities of using technology creatively to solve visual problems.
The combination of technology & art is a winning combination. Learning becomes fun, easy and rewarding. Students will gain job skills by keeping up with the current job market that requires employees to be able to use computers.
My students need 4 drawing tablets so we will have 10 drawing tablets with 10 computers for 30 students.
They want to learn and use technology, be at ease with technology and confident in themselves so they will have many technology job skills when they graduate in this technological world.
