Help me give my students a fun, innovative way to work on character analysis, word study and vocabulary study while incorporating drawing using Newyes LCD writing tablets and protective cases.
My students are amazing! I primarily work with rural, impoverished, struggling readers in grades PreK through grade six as a reading specialist. Many of my student's literacy experiences have been difficult due to learning disabilities, weak background knowledge, poor language skills, and at times, a negative experience or two related to learning to read.
In my room, I believe that ALL children can learn, especially when they are active participants in the process.
At times, they enter the room needing to learn to enjoy books and literacy again. "If reading isn't fun, you're not doing it right" is a prominent focus in my room.
Once students overcome their initial struggles with literacy and recognize with fun and hard work, the growth they make as readers and writers is amazing.
My Project
When young, struggling readers and writers are able to put ideas into drawing, they are better able to demonstrate their thinking. Understanding student thinking is critical to determining the best instructional approaches to use to help them make growth as readers and writers.
Drawing is a great way for early readers and writers to demonstrate knowledge of vocabulary, understanding of character, and overall reading or listening comprehension.
Above all, struggling readers need to be engaged in meaningful literacy activities. Drawing is great way to engage struggling readers, whether representing what a word means in vocabulary study or whether demonstrating character thoughts in "thinking bubbles."
In my reading intervention room, I try to incorporate a variety of student learning styles. Traditional methods of chalk and dry erase boards are messy and cumbersome when incorporating drawing. Oftentimes, I push into teachers classrooms, making it cumbersome to bring many materials for the arts with me. These LCD boards incorporate a neat, new way for students to engage in drawing activities related to literacy.
