This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students come from a low socioeconomic area. 100% of my students receive a free lunch. They come from multiethnic and multilingual homes. For most of them, this will be their first school experience. And it will be remotely.
Our school is the heart of our community.
My students are longing to come to school, but this will not be possible due to the health concerns that our country is currently facing. I must do my best, as their teacher, to make this transition as smooth as possible.
Please help my students succeed during distance learning. They are bright and eager to learn. They don’t have the luxury of having all of the accommodations that other students may have in higher socioeconomic areas of the city.
My Project
In thinking about all of the things that my students will need during distance learning, drawing paper is one of the top items. My students usually go through hundreds of papers during a semester. Besides speaking, their primary method of expression is through drawing.
Drawing is pre-writing.
Children learn to make marks on a paper. They learn to draw figures and backgrounds. They develop their drawing much quicker than their writing. They might draw a picture of two figures and add inventive writing. The child will need to tell you what he/she wrote because the writing is only imitation to ours. This is the writing process.
I would like to gift every child a sketchbook to practice and learn drawing skills. A bound sketchbook is a great way to keep all of the work in one place and to be able to see the progress though time. Yes, they will write and draw on their computer devices, but because they will not be in the classroom, it is so important to be able to have them practice their hand-eye coordination and develop those little writing muscles in their hands. Drawing is magic. It can lead to great stories and use of imagination.
