Drawing from Nature (Especially Birds!)

My students need drawing supplies as they examine then sketch nature scenes and creatures!

My Students

Our students live in crowded urban environments. Lately many have enjoyed working with container gardens in science class (some even come early to school for garden activities). Students have started sketching in journals and need some drawing supplies.

Students range from 14-18 and many are learning English as a second language.

Located in the sunny Mission, every day teen moms & babies come to school. Young women can start at our school while they are expecting & continue after their baby is born. Students continue with their academic education as well as learning parenting skills, healthy baby strategies and useful community resources (including jobs & money management).

My Project

Students will sketch birds & other neighborhood creatures. They will research local birds & animals, making notes as well as drawings of their findings. They will draft non fiction stories about nature. Finally they will create short graphic books (comics) featuring nature drawings!

This will be a new extension for students.

They are familiar with taking notes on research. Adding drawing & sketching will extend visual literacy & enrich the work our students are doing. Our students will enjoy using equipment specifically designed for nature drawing.
