My Students

Hello! I am an Art teacher at a Pre-K-6th grade Elementary School in Pahoa, HI. Our community is one of the lowest income areas in East Hawaii island. Our kids rely on our school for meals and a stable environment. Art is very important to them as a way to relax, learn new skills and show off their talents.

Our students love art and are eager to try some new projects this year.

Some of the items we are in need of are construction paper, tempura cakes, oil pastels, and acrylic and tempura paints. We also need paper plates, paper towels and napkins for easy clean up between classes on painting days. Our Art budget for 575 kids is only $250 which has been spent on paper, paint, chalk pastels and markers.

My Project

Hello! I am an Art Teacher at Keonepoko Elementary school in the Puna District on Hawaii's Big Island. I love teaching art and planning new lessons that connect the students to local artists and the world around them. I try to bring Polynesian themed lessons to them along with local, living artists they can relate to, like Heather Brown and Sig Zane.

This year we have done Easter Island Moai using oil pastels, Sig Zane inspired surfboard designs and Romero Britto inspired Cats.

Many of my lessons use oil pastels and paint - we love the color we get with these! We use a lot of black construction paper to mount work to show it off. We are going to try a "Expressive Monkey" lesson with cake tempura - I'm hearing it is a favorite medium from other art teachers - easy to use and lasts all year.

I have some left handed children and want to provide them with left-handed scissors for their comfort. My goal is to inspire a love of art and the confidence to create!
