Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As I watch him grip the crayon and try to color in the shape, his eyes darting up at me, I feel a pain in my heart. Yet, when I put a paint brush in his hands he smiles and paints as if he were Picasso. If I give him magnetic letters or stamps, he spells his name.

My incredible class is made up of students who are Deaf, Deaf/Blind, autistic, orthopedically impaired, cognitively impaired and other health impaired.

Yes, we are special education, but we are special in so many ways. Most of my students are non-verbal. We communicate using gestures, American Sign Language, PECS, icon, object/symbols, assistive communication devices as well as speech. I use whatever it takes. They enjoy coming to school so much. Each one of them thrive on routine and without knowing how to tell time they can practically run the classroom if I'm not there using their picture/symbol schedules. Their favorite time of day is "Morning Circle Time" when they get to "sign in", greet each other, perform calendar tasks, and basically "show off" for each other.

My Project

The resources I'm requesting are part of my integrated writing program. Many of my students or unable to hold a crayon, pencil or writing utensil even with grips provided by the occupational therapist. I use stamps, magnetic letters, paints and other tools to allow my students to "write" without becoming frustrated while still providing them with fine motor activities at the same time. Many of the items I'm asking for are replacement items for things that are broken and/or unusable.

Writing is an essential tool for a non-verbal child.

Writing has many steps and usually begins with development of motor skills. Many of students need daily practice with fine motor and gross motor. Painting, stamping, magnetic letters, and magic tracing allow them opportunities for NO STRESS "writing" and motor skills practice. Please help empower my students with the ability to one day write as a form of communication.
