Draw, Design, Discover: Visual Storytelling for ENL Students

My Project
Our high school in Harlem serves many entering and emerging ENL students who thrive when given visual and physical ways to engage with language learning. This project will provide chalk markers and stickers to support a unit on illustration and storytelling, allowing students to connect visually with new vocabulary, express their ideas, and collaborate with peers.
For multilingual learners, drawing and design offer an accessible entry point into English, reducing anxiety around written language while reinforcing comprehension.
Through window illustration, visual notetaking, and picture book creation, students will interact with language physically, deepening understanding through color, shape, and imagery. These activities promote retention by linking words to visuals and enabling students to engage with content on their own terms.
John Parra’s picture books, included in this project, will serve as both inspiration and models for students. His expressive artwork and culturally rich stories will help students connect words to images, supporting comprehension and vocabulary acquisition. By analyzing Parra’s use of visuals in storytelling, students will gain confidence in creating their own picture books, using both art and language to share their voices.
Stickers will provide scaffolding for the final project, allowing students to create their picture books with ease. Pre-printed stickers with key vocabulary, sentence starters, and prompts will help students confidently build narratives, focusing on illustrations while reinforcing new words and sentence structures.
This project also fosters peer collaboration. As students create, they will teach each other new words, sharing insights and ideas in a supportive environment. The project makes language learning tangible, engaging, and student-centered, helping ENL students navigate English with creativity and confidence.
