I teach a special needs preschool at a local elementary school. We have children from 3-5 years old. Because of the varying needs of the children in my class I need toys ranging from infant to 5-year-old toys. As you can imagine with multiple children this age toys need to be replaced frequently and they need to be sturdy! I also need some special toys and materials for physically disabled children. Many of these toys will be shared with the general education preschool classes that are also in our school.
The children love to use hands-on materials that assist with learning!
Building toys have recently become a favorite and we need a bigger selection of these as well as adding some toys for our children with physical limitations and some tricycles for the children to use outside.
I have also selected some big books with hands-on materials to engage children with reading and items for a light table that we have in the classroom. The children love using the light table and we are able to teach a lot of basic concepts while they are having fun with the light table.
Dramatic play is a very important part of child development. With so many electronic devices out there now, many kids are really missing this part of development and it is crucial!
Children learn to self regulate during dramatic play.
This is really one of the most important skills that they need to help them succeed in school. This helps them learn to control impulses and work with others. Dramatic play also helps children learn about emotions and how to cope with them. It also helps them learn about how to get along with others. Let's face it, if you don't play nicely you don't have friends! This is where children start to learn to interact with others. You just cannot do that on an electronic device!
Dramatic play also helps them learn new vocabulary, literacy skills, and math skills.
Who knew we were learning so much when we were dressing up and playing house!
