My Students

Every child loves to play dress up and pretend to be someone or something else. Now I need your help so my students can have dramatic play props to use in their new dramatic play based curriculum.

My preschool students live in Washington, DC and attend an open space school.

They live in a community that experiences violence and danger on a daily basis. Many of these small children have experienced this violence and danger first hand and is the reason they live in a single parent home. Their short life experience causes many of them to have difficulty adjusting to school and expressing their feelings in appropriate ways. They are resilient though and love coming to school to experience new things.

My Project

We just adopted a new curriculum these year that is dramatic play based. My preschool students turn our room into a house, grocery store, restaurants, hospital, and vet office. These props will help us in the transformation of our room and to develop our themes. Most of the materials will be used across more than one theme. The baby materials will be used in the house theme, grocery store, and hospital themes. The tools will be used throughout all the themes to repair vehicles and equipment. The shopping carts will be used in the grocery theme to shop for groceries. And the cupcakes will be used in the grocery and restaurant theme in the bakery.

With your help, we can give these preschool students real life experience that they most likely will not get outside of the school walls.

Through their experiences in these real life centers, they will have an opportunity to learn the roles of specific jobs and can create an interest for them to peruse that interest as a career.
