My students need dramatic play costumes, like The Toddler Dress-Op Trunk, to help them better understand different roles they see in their daily lives. Paint, glitter, water and sand play will help this as well.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My 4 and 5 year old students have a limited amount of costume play. We have been forced to make career costumes for the students to express roles they have seen in our community. These "career costumes" are made from construction paper. These costumes have a short life span.
The neighborhood my students belong to is of low socioeconomic status.
The school has a high population of Latino students. The economic struggles the nation is facing is evident in our students and their families. The entire school qualifies to receive a free lunch. Our school is a Title I school. The school PTA often asks for food donations to make baskets for the families in our school with the greatest needs.
My Project
My students need dramatic play costumes, The Toddler Dress-Op Trunk to help them better understand different roles they see in their daily lives. Paint, glitter, water and sand play will help this as well. The 4 and 5 year old students I work with have a limited English vocabulary. We do a lot of learning through dramatic play. Many times when learning new words and concepts it is absolutely essential that I bring in "realia" and pictures to help them better understand what we are talking about. Learning about the different roles in our community will them better understand the world they live in. Being able to role play the different community workers will help them to develop language as well provide a better understanding of the careers.
Children learn best through play.
Benefits of play in the classroom include:
Physical: increase in strength, overall fitness, motor skill development, health;
Cognitive: increase in skills such as problem solving, creative thinking, planning, organizing, language, and overall academic success;
Social and Emotional: enhanced development of cooperation, sharing, turn taking, less ego-centrism, increase in pro-social values and self esteem, practice of appropriate social roles. Please give my students these gifts.
