Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember the first time you read a book that really just "got you"? My students don't often have the opportunities to read pieces of literature that they can really relate to, but "Novio Boy", a seven-act drama about a young Mexican American youth, could give them that.
The students that make up my classes are almost all low income, Hispanic students.
Many of them are learning English as a second language. Teaching Reading to students who struggle to even have a conversation in the English language can be a challenge, but providing them with a piece of literature that is written from the perspective of someone just like them would be a huge step in the right direction on the path of teaching them to love reading.
My Project
The protagonist of "Novio Boy", Rudy, is a freshman in high school who represents a typical Mexican American student. He is facing the same struggles they typically face in their daily lives, including being a minority, living a low income lifestyle, and pining after older high school girls.
I truly feel that sharing a piece of literature with my students that reflects so many pieces of their own lives would motivate them to read and hopefully create the opportunity for a lifelong love of learning.
