Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
There are some great things going on in drama this year! The social and emotional growth in my students I have seen has really wowed me. Examining the emotions and reactions of characters has given them the tools to assess their own emotions and responses to challenging situations.
We are not just learning how to be characters; we are learning how to be human.
Everyday, my students are steadily gaining confidence and finding their voice. I see them re-examining their critiques of others and exercising compassion as they give constructive criticism. In my classroom, we are understanding who we are in the world in comparison to the characters we play and preparing ourselves to be the change in the world we wish to see.
My Project
Our children are coming to age at a time when diversity and tolerance seem under attack. Basic social skills like empathy, good manners and active listening are being replaced by their negative counterparts. In the beginning of the year, students are sometimes hesitant to speak up during our scene exercises. They haven't found their voice yet.
Exploring emotions through acting is a catalyst for self-awareness, reflection and positive change.
Students who are shy use these puppets to express themselves and/or characters being discussed. Sometimes pretending to be someone else can give you the courage to be exactly who you are. My students will love these new puppets and so will I.
