Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

At my high-need urban charter school, our students are fortunate to learn in a rigorous academic environment where music is incorporated into every school day. Our school's resources are channeled towards materials that support the arts-infused academic curriculum, such as books and instruments. Although we are encouraged to facilitate student learning through child-centered, hands-on activities, our school's limited resources cannot provide many of the materials that would make this possible. My kindergarten classroom has a wealth of books, math materials, and science tools but no materials for creative play that supports hands-on learning at the early childhood level.

One way for my kindergarten classroom to become a more rich, child-centered learning environment is through the establishment of centers in which students can learn through play. A drama center would be a place where students can create their own make-believe stories and recreate the stories they have read in books like The Gingerbread Man. Moreover, students would be learning cooperation, practicing social skills, and developing their oral language abilities. Although my students love to share, talk, and role play, they have no outlet to support those learning experiences.

With some pretend kitchen furniture and supplies, I could turn a corner of our room into a drama center. My students could develop social skills as they role play about their life experiences, increase beginning literacy knowledge as they create their own stories, and deepen story comprehension as they dramatize familiar books. Their social, language, and literacy learning would come alive!

With your help, all of this "drama" will become possible. Your generous donation will provide my students with the resources my classroom needs to become a more child-centered learning environment full of opportunities to explore the world through dramatic play.
