This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Kindergarten is a special time for students! It is when students start to build a love for school, reading, success and so much more. It is my goal to make sure that I am setting all of my students up for success, not only for first grade, but for the rest of their educational career.
Many of my students have great obstacles to overcome which is why it takes a team.
All of my students receive free lunch. Many are performing below grade level. There are also students who have already experienced significant trauma in their short lifetime such as homelessness, death and neglect. I try hard to make sure my students are set up for success as much as possible while in my classroom!
My Project
Everyone remembers Dr. Seuss books! These books are a great way to get kids excited about reading. This is exactly what I would love to do in my classroom!
I would love to give my students the chance to have a Dr. Seuss reading challenge.
For this, I will need Dr. Seuss books to give to all my students for the challenge and another, for when they complete the challenge as a prize. To kick it off, I will decorate the room in all Dr. Seuss things. These decorations are included in the project. Once their excitement is piqued, I will introduce the challenge.
Students will need to practice their new book nightly to be able to read it independently. These books are filled with sight words. Having them practice these books will be a great way to help them reach new reading levels before the end of the school year!
