My Project
My 26 second-grade bilingual students have come a long way as readers this year. Many of them were barely reading in Spanish when the school year started and they are beginning to read independently now, so it is time for them to start reading in English. Some others were good readers in Spanish when they started second grade, but still needed a lot of practice to become fluent readers in English. At the end of the second term, I realized how much all of them have grown as readers, so I thought that giving them access to one of the most beloved authors of all time would be a great way to celebrate such growth.
I would like to add all these Dr. Seuss titles to our classroom library as they are books my students will enjoy greatly and will help them improve their fluency and vocabulary in English.
I also plan to read some of these books aloud, so wearing a Cat in the Hat costume can add more fun to our reading. Besides, I would like to use the pencils as a reward for my students' efforts to improve their reading and a way to boost their readers' stamina.
Reading at grade level at the end of second grade is one of the most important skills my students need to have to guarantee that they will be successful in their future school years. I hope that by giving my students the chance to enjoy these Dr. Seuss's books they will be able to achieve this objective.
