I teach an Environmental Science course in a mostly rural part of the state of North Carolina. Most of my students come from hard-working families and close to 30% of our students receive free or reduced lunch.
The course I teach focuses on "Sustainable Development" throughout the year and one of the topics that we cover deals with a week long lesson about humans protecting, conserving, and preserving our natural resources. To motivate my students on the topic, I purchased a DVD copy of Dr Seuss's "Lorax" to introduce the idea of what man can do when he abuses the resources he has and what we can learn from our experiences.
I am requesting eight copies of the book, "The Lorax,” for my students to read after viewing the movie. My students love the movie and we would like to extend the story with an activity. They will complete the activity using the book and the illustrations to probe the technology in the story, the environmental effects, and the lessons that can be learned from the story, and then devise a plan for sustainable development. Eight books will allow my students to complete this activity in small groups of three or four as I usually have large classes of 26-32. With your generous donation, the books will be used not only for motivation in science but will coax reading and comprehension skills for approximately 180 students each year and allow them to experience this timeless classic by Dr. Seuss.
