This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

What our school library needs most of all = tough, colorful, popular books for our littlest readers - that's around 250 kids in Pre-K, Kinder and 1st Grade. This 36-book selection just fits the bill. It should really help us attract our youngest kids (and their moms and dads) to the library!

Who are these students, their parents, and why do they need books?

The kids attend a K-8 center in South Florida. They tend to come from low-income households. Their moms and dads are usually immigrants from South / Central America and the Caribbean who work in low-paying, seasonal jobs in the restaurant / hotel industries.

My Project

Our parents' economic situation and lack of English language skills mean that the kids in school don't encounter many books at home / patronize the public library. You can see why the school library is so vital to the kids and their families. We really need to keep our children well-supplied with tough (we're talking about little kids here!) and appealing books.

The 36 books in this selection are great for our youngest readers.

Half the books are by Dr. Seuss: you KNOW how kids go for those. The other half are from the 'Fly Guy' series. That's the latest craze among the little guys. Just google 'Fly Guy' and you'll see why. The kids can't get enough of them. Please, please help us attract our kids into the library. Moms and dads, too! Help us keep our community supplied with books!
