My Students

My students reflect the cultural richness of New York City - and they speak approximately 34 different languages among them!

Our school is an academically rigorous, tuition-free high school and college associate's degree program.

Many of my students are the first in their families to attend college. They are very eager for the opportunity to earn two years of free college tuition at the time of their high school graduation.

It is incredibly rewarding to work with such curious, eager, and motivated students. These students have organized Black Lives Matter Day with the help of faculty sponsors. These students deserve kudos for making this an amazing day!

My Project

Black Lives Matter Day is a very important day in students' lives. We are thrilled to invite a variety of empowering and enlightening guest speakers and performers to campus, and we're seeking support for a unique musical experience for students that will bring to life the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

"Prayers for the People" is a secular liturgical performance of Dr. King's "Letters from Birmingham Jail." It is performed by New York Live Arts, "a center of diverse artists devoted to body-based investigation that transcends barriers between and within communities led by world-renowned artist Bill T.

Jones."

Dr. King's text was written in response to a letter from eight religious leaders who asked him to stop speaking out against racism. The musical performance by six cantors celebrates the words Dr. King wrote while he was imprisoned, and helps these words resonate with our students. Audience participation will help students remember this day for years to come.

Students learn in different ways. This performance may reach students who can be hard to reach otherwise. Thank you for giving our students the gift of music and theater! Performance is a powerful language that not everyone gets to experience in their families and communities. School can present this opportunity, and help students become life-long lovers of the arts.

"Prayers for the People," is an interactive performance will foster deeper learning, making Black Lives Matter Day an unforgettable school day. It will help students internalize valuable messages from this historical text, and share a universal message about compassion and equality. We might even dare to say this performance will help the next generation build a better world.
