This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have the wonderful opportunity of working as the Crisis Intervention Teacher of K-5 students in the Special Education District for NYC. My students come from various backgrounds and most are considered to be in the low-socio economic status range. I work with the students in person every day on improving their social emotional skills. I'm extremely proud of the growth that they are able to make day by day. They continue to show perseverance in the face of adversity.
My Project
In working with students with special needs with the needs varying from Autism Spectrum Disorder, Emotional Disturbance, and Intellectual Disabilities just to name a few. One thing has remained constant across the board the students benefit from positive reinforcers to encourage positive behavior throughout the school.
Throughout our school program our students have the opportunities to earn points every period of the day for displaying behaviors such as Respect, Engagement, Accountability, Leadership.
The students have asked for next school year if they can have a points store where they can purchase items that they want using the points that they earned for displaying the above behaviors throughout the day. I conducted a survey of the students to see what type of items they would want to have available for them in the points store. Bluetooth speakers and wireless headphones were some of the top rated items that they wanted to have in the school store. This project getting funded would mean that my students would be able to have these items available to them as I am sure we all know that school budgets aren't able to fund initiatives like this.
The items in this project will help to start out our reward store for the upcoming school year. The items will be priced at different points so that the students would have to earn and save points in order to "buy" the items from the store that they want. This will also teach them delayed gratification and working hard for the items that they would like. Think of how rewarding my students will feel knowing that they were able to "purchase" these items for themselves by doing the
