My students need an opportunity to experience a story brought to life by live actors. They need to see a play performed by seasoned professionals and experience one of literature's first great modes of storytelling, drama.

My Students

My students come to our school for the challenge. Many are bright and articulate but need more challenges, greater responsibility, and deeper content to achieve their full potential. They come from a mixed group of low to high income, traditional, single-parent, and nontraditional homes, and various educational backgrounds and achievement levels.

My students enjoy reading literary classics to discover the good, the true, and the beautiful.

Despite the challenges in reading texts a fifty to a hundred or more years old, they have dived into reading Shakespeare, Dumas, Orczy, Bradbury, and Homer. They want to experience the truths of humanity that these writers observed and tried to express. Even more so, they want to learn to live as the noble life of heroes and avoid the ugly lives of villains. They seek their future through close reading of the beautiful literature of the past.

My Project

This year, my seventh grade literature students will be reading the novella Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson. The Orlando Shakespeare Theater is performing a play version of this same story. This play will serve as an excellent introduction to the story and provide my more visual and auditory students with a background before reading.

In addition, Robert Louis Stevenson's tale of humanity's civilized and animal natures at war within one man will give my students opportunities to explore the difference between desire and reason, civility and hubris.

My students, through pre-performance, during, and after performance activities will learn about the structure of plays, do some of their own performing and, more importantly, relate Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde to their own lives. They will seek to understand how these two characters are them as much as they are fiction, and discover how they might subdue negative emotions with reason while never forgetting the power of the beautiful emotions of love, passion, and friendship.
