Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Burroughs School is a small school of 550 students. The majority of our students are Mexican American, but we also have Asian, African American and Caucasian students. More than 94% of our families live at or below the poverty level. The teachers at our school are fine and dedicated. These children are "our kids" and our test scores are steadily increasing because of our commitment to teaching the "whole child." We would love to take our 2nd graders to Water Tower Place on Michigan Avenue's Magnificent Mile to experience a professional production of "You're a Good Man Charlie Brown." As a second grade teacher at Burroughs, I have experienced the profound effect the arts have on our young learners. Their love of music and theatre positively impacts their understanding of text and influences their writing. It's a natural way to learn. Two classrooms (50 students) could get downtown in about 20 minutes from Burroughs School. We would attend the performance & be home in time for lunch. After that we would draw, paint & write about our amazing experience! We would reenact some scenes. Please help inspire us!
