Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We love reading classic fiction! We are learning about past eras where customs seem foreign and yet civilized to us. What does Alice in Wonderland really represent? Is it a child's book or a lesson in adult manners? We plan to find out as we read the book and explore the Victorian era.

My students are great inner city high school young adults who come from a low-income background.

Most of them have not traveled much and are learning about different eras and cultures through reading. We are traveling in the library and in the confines of our homes. We have read Jane Austen, Sherlock Holmes and hope to continue our British experience with Alice in Wonderland. At the end we are going to have a tea party complete with tea and crumpets!

My Project

A beautifully illustrated book is a doorway to knowledge and imagination. By reading Alice in Wonderland my students will be able to prepare for college by experiencing a great literary classic. We will be able to read the book on many levels, literary, social, economic and cultural. We can imagine the life of Alice before she falls down the rabbit hole and after. What would it be like to be the Queen of Hearts? Are there any political figures in this century that the colorful characters in Alice call to mind?

We love to read and we love to own books.

Most of my students do not have the extra money to buy books of their own. From the generous donors at Donors Choose they are staring their own libraries to cherish for many years to come.
